I drove over to Chesterton tonight to see Chesterton and Zach Novak host a mediocre Hobart team.
At the half Zach already has 28 points (6 three's) in a blow out. The big game will be this weekend against Michigan City and 6' 8" Jarod Jones.
I heard that Ball State will be at the game as well as a number of Big Ten schools and other MAC schools, ISU, Butler and SIU.
I also heard he likes Ball State as a University and campus and has friends that attend BSU. _________________ "THE REGION - CHICAGO'S SUNNYSIDE"

Novak sat for over a quarter in the second half and ended the game with 35 points. I do not know if it has been mentioned but he is left handed.
He takes only gifted and talented classes at Chesterton and still enjoys an A average.
From what I know of Coach Taylor and staff it sounds like Zach is exactly the type of guy we are looking for. I would also describe him as a scorer more than a shooter but he certainly can shoot with range and plays very hard and aggressive. _________________ "THE REGION - CHICAGO'S SUNNYSIDE"

Zach Novak and his Chesterton teammates lit up Michigan City in front of a packed house (7,000+) at City last night. Novak had an off night only scoring 24 points and nine boards (lol) as the Trojans remain unbeaten and cruised to a 20 point win. Jarod Jones the 6' 8" big man at city was held to 8 points.
A number of college coaches were in attendance with most noticeable was Valpo's Bryce Drew who reportedly sees a larger version of himself in Novak. I also heard Coach Simmons was there representing the Cardinals.
DonDo or Bigfoot have you got any thoughts on Novak or Jones since you guys live in the neighborhood? _________________ "THE REGION - CHICAGO'S SUNNYSIDE"

Well, at least an IPFW coach and Bryce Drew showed up... Quote:
| MICHIGAN CITY -- It's gotten to the point where Chesterton coach Tom Peller doesn't even worry about where star shooter Zack Novak fires from anymore.
The 3-point line. Well beyond the arc. Well beyond that point. Maybe the popcorn stand. Doesn't matter to Peller, nor should it. Novak's range appears limitless, and he proved it once again in front of a full house at Michigan City, where at least two Division-I college coaches took in Chesterton's 67-47 win Friday night.
There was a coach from IPFW in the stands and also a notable one from Valparaiso University -- Bryce Drew. What they saw is what Peller has grown used to seeing every night with Novak, who lit up the second half with makes. |
| Hopefully where it says "at least two Division-I college coaches", they mean there were more -- such as Coach Simmons or someone from here at least testing the waters on this kid. Maybe RegionRat can keep his eyes peeled for us.

My sources confirm Coach Simmons was there.
I also think Zack wants to play a little further from home being that the Valpo campus from his home in Chesterton is less than 10 miles away. The ARC at VU is cozy but Chesterton HS and many of the schools in the DAC have larger facilities. He just got done playing in front of a crowd of over 7,000 for his conference game against Mich. City so I am not sure playing in a venue at VU that is the same size of his HS gym (if not smaller) is very appealing. _________________ "THE REGION - CHICAGO'S SUNNYSIDE"

The ARC is larger than Chesterton's gym. Not by much. But CHS has a brand new 4,800-seat facility that would be the envy of many Division I teams.
Michigan City's gym is huge, but it was built in the early 1970s and hasn't been updated since. It doesn't resemble a college facility at all. (I almost referred to it as "M.C. Rogers" there, so I'm dating myself...)
I'm not sure how much this facility stuff will come into play, though.

This is true. While a great facility, Chesterton seats just 4,886 while VU is 5,000 exactly. Not much of a difference there (just 114 seats), but still. And actually, Michigan City (7,304) is the only DAC gym larger than VU's ARC. Valpo HS also seats 5,000, everyone else is smaller I believe.
Chesterton holds 4,886, Portage 4,000, LaPorte 3,956, Crown Point's new gym is said to be just under 4,000 (although it looks bigger), but I'm not sure on the exact number.
Of course, all of the above dwarf IUPUI and Blowing Green. _________________ "Get some facts, and come back and see me." -- Jim Calhoun

Why would this kid want to play at Valpo versus Ball State ?? I'd bet Billy Taylor does a lot more with our program over the next few seasons than what will happen at Valpo...plus Ball State versus Valpo...plus his friends are here?? Not so sure we won't get him??

Novak would be a great get for BSU. Not sure why there isn't or hasn't been more interest in the guy. Plus he's a great baseball player.

I know the family and Zach and I have spoken to him several times.
Zach is a great guy, student and player as has been reported many times on this site. He is a perfect fit for our program and can definitely play at the major level. Ball State just needs to evaluate how he will fit in and be used within our program. I think because of his height 6'4" that he will be used as a two or small three.
Zach has been to Ball State several times and likes the school so that is a plus. VU is attractive academically and as a basketball program but is very close to home (not ideal).
If Zach can improve his ball handling skills to a level comparable to a guy who has played the two guard position throughout his HS career which Zach has not - he will be very much a bigger versions of a "Bryce Drew" type player. The guy is a relentless worker and practices every aspect of his game with an obsession reminding me of a "Larry Bird" type in that respect.
For some reason everybody just seems to be finding out about him and the programs that are inquiring are impressive and some are elite.
Hang on as things are going to get interesting especially if Chesterton continues to win big.

Mr Novak was spotted behind the IU bench Sunday. I hear IU is making a late push because they will have a schoolie when Gordon declares for the draft.

I worry about schools like Duke, Standford, Northwestern etc. as well. IU also is a concern especially when he has been compared as a larger version of Tom Coverdale.
